About My Work No artistic theory guides my work. My goal is to liberate my mind from conscious expectations of how a photograph should look, allowing myself to see in new ways. This is true both when taking a photograph with a camera, making a photograph in the digital darkroom, and viewing photographs made by others. If I have some form of personal connection with a photograph, then for me it is a good photograph. While I wish to avoid any conscious expectation, I have no doubt that there are expectations that exist below the conscious level. In the words of the late educator and critic Bill Jay, “Our individual responses to a photographer’s work or to a single picture are products of an infinite number of cultural, educational, political and personal factors, all in constant flux and modified by every choice we have ever made.” What and how I choose to photograph are driven by these same factors and choices. The philosophy of Taoism guides my everyday life and influences my photography. I have no doubt that the work of others in some way influences my own.
About Me Although I received degrees in Psychology and Rehabilitation Counseling, my career eventually settled in information technology where I was fortunate to have exciting and challenging assignments working with people from around the world. There came a time when the stress of the challenge and travel outweighed the benefits, so I retired some years ago at age 51, giving me the opportunity to rekindle my passion for photography. I still reside in northern New Jersey in a small, rural town where occasionally you will still find horses tied up outside the local bar. I have been happily married to my wife Rebecca for 36 years. We share an interest in our gardens, art and the outdoors in general. Our dog Maddy helps us keep watch over an assortment of geese, ducks and other domestic animals, protecting them from the local assortment of wildlife including black bear, mountain lion, coyote, fox and mink. Yes, I do live in New Jersey. |
